In response to continued revenue declines and limited new revenue measures, lawmakers cut education — K-12, University System, and Technical College System — by 13 to 15 percent for fiscal year (FY) 2011 when compared to the Original FY 2009 General Budget, which preceded the recessionary budget cuts. The General Assembly took some positive steps to address the $5 billion deficit. However, they continued passing long-term tax cuts during this Great Recession ($624 million a year), disregarded other revenue options, and shifted the cost of services onto the middle- and low- income. If the gov vetoes HBs 1023 and 1069, he will prevent revenue drains on future budgets and prevent shifting taxes onto Georgians earning the lowest 20% of incomes. Download the PDF.
