(01/19/2006) Fair Taxes for Low-Income Working Families: A Georgia Earned Income Tax CreditCommonly described as a work incentive, the federal earned income tax credit (EITC) reduces or eliminates income taxes for low-income working families and provides a refund that offsets other payroll taxes such as Social Security. Following the example set by the federal government, eighteen states and the District of Columbia have enacted state-level earned income tax credits to improve tax fairness and provide wage enhancements for low-income working families. This policy brief evaluates the need for a Georgia EITC and provides design and cost considerations.
