The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal tax credit that serves as one of the nation’s most effective policies at keeping working families out of poverty and moving toward the middle class. It cuts taxes from the bottom up for people like sales clerks, teaching assistants, home health aides and other workers that earn low wages. The credit is available only to people who work and grows in size, up to a point, as wages rise.
