Methodology

Figure 1: GBPI analysis of Department of Health and Human Services’ data on state and county estimates of the uninsured population in the U.S. using the Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. This analysis is based solely on income level, age and uninsurance status; it does not account for other factors that impact one’s access to public or private health insurance.

Figure 2: GBPI analysis of hospital University of North Carolina’s Sheps Center for Health Services Research data on rural hospital closures, Georgia Department of Community Health’s data on rural counties without a hospital, Georgia Department of Community Health’s financial need ranking for the 2024 rural hospital tax credit, Department of Health and Human Services’ data on geographic and high needs geographic health professional shortage area (HPSA) designations, and Deloitte/March of Dimes data on number of obstetric providers by county.
